This museum, which occupies spacious, bright picture of the Palace Villaermosa, perfectly complements the Prado, as here collected works of other eras: an early Italian painting, Dutch painting of the XVII century, the German expressionism, geometric abstraction and pop art.
In the museum until 2005 were all 800 paintings collected in the period from 1920 to 1980 by the Swiss industrialist Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza and his father. At the request of his wife, Carmen Server (former Miss Spain), Baron sold his entire collection to Spain for a symbolic price in 1993. Updating the museum in 2004 led to an increase in the number of works, joined by his wife's personal collection of Baron, consisting of more than 200 paintings collection.
