Whale Watching in Laguna Ojo de Liebre

Tours cost roughly $40 and can be arranged in the town of Guerrero Negro, just off the Transpeninsular. Generally plan on booking the trip the day before you want to go, as the tour departs fairly early in the morning. You'll be out in a boat for a good part of the day, so pack long sleeves, a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses...and more film/batteries than you think you need.

Once you're out on the lagoon, your boat driver will move about the bay based on the whales - if you come across some, he'll generally follow them until they disappear, and then he'll move on to other whales if possible. Usually the best way to locate a whale is to look for spouts, though occasionally they may even breach.

Pangas (boats) are supposed to maintain a specific distance from the whales...but the whales often break that plane on their own and approach the boat, occasionally close enough to touch - which is why they're called "friendly whales.”
