Horseriding at Hilton Head

Horseriding at Hilton Head

Lawton Stables provides riding lessons and train rides at their Sea Pines location. The trail rides go several times a day and last for about two hours all up. Very little experience is required as the horses follow one another and only walk. There are generally about 15-20 in a group we were told. The trail ride takes you through the forest at Sea Pines, around a lake and eventually back to the stables. It was $50.00 per head, the horses were in good condition and the staff seemed very competent.

Some points to note:
There is a $5/day fee to enter Sea Pines if you are not staying there. Lawton's accepts credit cards for a deposit when booking, but only take cash or checks for payment. There was a discount card that gave you $5 off available for guests at Waterside, but you had to remember to show your card at payment.

You can’t go to Hilton Head without going to Harbor Town in the Sea Pines Plantation. The Harbor Town lighthouse is probably the most recognized symbol of the Hilton Head, often seen in the background during the MCI Heritage Golf Tournament.

The Harbor Town 18 Hole Golf Links is here, as well as a pro-shop. The Sea Pines Racquet Club is also located here and has seen the faces of a few famous tennis pros. There is also a pro-shop on location.

Harbor town is picturesque, with the red- and white-striped lighthouse at the point. You can climb up to the top of the lighthouse for a view of the harbor. The harbor is full of beautiful yachts and boats.

Greg Russell sings under the Liberty Oak Tree in the evenings.

There are a bunch of unique little boutiques and gift shops. There is a Crazy Crab restaurant, as well as a couple other cafés, outdoor cabana-type bars, and places to get a drink and sit outside, as well as ice-cream stands.

There is also a large playground named after the signed Greg Russell.

From the website:
Gregg Russell Concerts
Relish the spirit of the holidays in Harbour Town with an evening of music and merriment. Listen as Gregg Russell plays his guitar and sings songs of the season for children and adults of all ages. Gregg Russell has been entertaining audiences of all kinds for over 25 years. Complimentary; no reservations required. Start Time: 7:30pm.

My take on it:
Even as an adult this is one of my favorite things to do on Hilton Head! My parents first started taking me to hear Gregg Russell sing when I was a little kid, and just last 4th of July I was back to hear him again as a 32-year-old! He is still just as fun as ever and brings out the funniest reactions and comments from the kids in the audience.

The scene is set under an old oak tree where all the kids sit in a big jumble up by the stage on the ground. The parents and adults all sit behind them on wooden benches.

Many of the families return each year, so the kids become very familiar with the routine. The kids themselves, or with some help from mom and dad, write signs and posters to get Gregg’s attention. He will read the signs out to the audience or invite kids up onstage to show their signs, sing, and just chat with them. He is very comical, and it makes for a very entraining evening regardless of age.

He sings catchy songs kids can sing along with, and some of the songs he has written himself. He also sings some classics, and my favorite was Country Roads Take me home . . ., where he incorporates the names of the states many of the kids in the audience are from.

Sea Pines Harbor Town is a beautiful setting, and this is an evening activity not to miss.

What a great experience for children! It was our first time going and we had never heard of this. We actually went into Harbour Town to sightsee and eat. We stumbled on the show and the kids were very pleased. There was great family music. This is a can't miss activity.

Harbortown Shops

The shops at Sea Pines Plantation and Harbortown are fun to walk through. We also ventured to the top of the lighthouse at Harbortown. If you have an interest in history and have good legs, it's worth the $3 to walk up the many flights of stairs. There are several informative things to read on the way up and there is a gift shop on the top level. You can walk outside of the lighthouse and take photos. The stairways are narrow as well as the aisles in the gift shop, so I wouldn't recommend going up if it very crowded.
