Cliffs of Moher

We took a day trip to the Cliffs of Moher. It costs €100 and it's totally worth it. 650 feet straight up out of the Atlantic... just breathtaking. We went in November, which is off-season for Ireland. So there was some construction going on - they are building a welcome center and a gift shop and improving the stairs and pathways for you to view the cliffs, which is nice, but a little distracting. One other thing... do not steer off the path! The day before our trip, a 35 year old Polish woman walked off the pathway and went to look over the edge and a huge gust of wind blew of her off... she fell to her death. So please, be careful, especially with children. Just follow directions and you will be OK. There is a zero cost to see the cliffs, parking is €5.

Cliffs of Moher

This is one place every person needs to go when they visit Ireland! It may have no railings on the edges of the cliffs, but it is worth it to sit on the edge and take pictures of the waves hitting the cliffs and the beautiful scenery.

The Cliffs of Moher

Stop at the Cliffs of Moher for a spectacular view of Ireland's dramatic coastline. The limestone walls of rock dominate the coast of Clare for five miles and rise to staggering heights of 700 feet. On a clear day, keep your eye out for the Aran Islands, situated 30 miles out in Galway Bay.

Cliffs of Moher

Along the west coast of Ireland, about an hour's drive from Limerick, stand the Cliffs of Moher. These sheer cliffs rise as much as 600 feet straight out of the sea, offering a dizzying view straight down to anyone courageous enough to belly up to the edge.

It's all quite safe, of course, unless you do something stupid. From the parking lot, there's a walkway with a barrier to keep you away from harm and many people get enough of a view walking the half-mile of so to the gift shop/tower to the north.

However, if you want to climb over the fence, past the 'do not go beyond this point' type signs and walk south along the cliffs, we've been told its permitted though not encouraged. According to our source, the walk along the cliffs is part of the Burren Way hiking path and continues a full three miles further, to Hag's Head.

Naturally, we had to explore this. To one side, the cliffs; to the other, pastures with grazing cows. The path did get uncomfortably close to the edge in places . . . most uncomfortably where the ground was a bit wet and muddy . . . but it was wonderful to get away from the milling crowds on the main walkway to experience the wild wind, occasional salt spray (blown 600 feet up from the waves below!) and sounds of the sea birds
