Snorkeling in Cozumel

Cozumel was a stop on our cruise itenerary and instead of paying the outrageous fees for the ship's snorkeling excusion, we booked with a local beforehand and had a BLAST. The group is called Manta Raya Divers and they lead both snorkeling and diving trips. Fernando, the head guy, spoke near perfect English and was easy to get in contact with before we ever arrived via email. He took the time to answer all of our questions and make sure we were set up before we arrived. The boat was located in a marina away from the hustle and bustle of the tourists, about a $10 cab ride from the cruise ship dock. The boat was absolutely spotless. Fernando and his assistant Sammy took us out to two different locations to snorkel- both were beautiful and we saw so many different types of fish, eels, baracudas and starfish! Fernando was funny and knowledgeable about the island, full of fun facts. Sammy actually dove with us, so it was like we had a full time guide in the water at all time. He explained all about the different types of fish, and even dove down to the bottom of the ocean floor to bring something back us for us to look at! They both went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed- we were able to pick the itenerary, and after that they spoiled us rotten- Even brought us Mexican beer to enjoy after the dive. We felt very safe with these guys, especially with someone in the water with us at all times. We could not have been more pleased with our experience, especially as we looked over at the cruise ship's excursion. They paid almost three times per person what we did and had to snorkel with 50 strangers. We highly recommend Fernando and Sammy at Manta Raya Divers in Cozumel for snorkeling and diving!

Snorkeling

My husband and I sailed on the Norwegian sun for our 2nd anniversary. One of the ports was Cozumel. We chose to book a private tour with Eagle Ray Divers (more about them in other journal entry). My husband and I are fairly new to snorkeling but the waters in Cozumel were amazing. First of all, the water is so clear that you can see the ocean floor even when the water is 30 to 40 feet in depth (in some places). The weather was great the day that we went. Our boat had 2 couples and their teenage daughters. The teenagers got bored very quickly and abandoned the snorkeling to sun on deck. Therefore, we had a very small group and our guide was able to point out things to us better. We saw a variety of sea creatures, including 2 different eels, angel fish, parrot fish, starfish, many types of coral, and a variety of other creatures that I do not know the name of. The highlight of our trip was seeing an octopus. We also snorkeled near an area where the previous hurricane had collapsed the pier and got some wonderful photos of the fish there. We spent several hours out on the boat (approximately an hour, sometimes more, at each reef) and I still wasn't ready to leave. It was an amazing experience.

We saw all of the advertisements trying to sell you snorkeling activities before we got to the Cancun and Cozumel area, and I am definitely glad we waited to do anything until we got there. You can purchase snorkeling activities over the Internet, but they will cost you between $75 and $90. If staying in Cancun, you can take a bus to the downtown bus terminal and take a connecting bus to the Playa Del Carmen bus terminal, which costs about $3.50. From there, you can take the ferry off of Avenue E, 2 blocks over from the bus terminal. The ferry, which cost $10 at the time, will get you to Cozumel. Spend some time in Playa Del Carmen while you are there. I wish I could have spent some more time there, as it is one of the most beautiful villages in the area.

When you decide to leave Playa Del Carmen, if you do, it will take you about an hour to make it into Cozumel. You can usually book a snorkeling trip on the ferry. Ours was only about $25, plus a $2 port fee, still much less than the $75 they were asking for through other places.

This was a great experience--you're in a group, and there are guides to take you in and help you if needed, since the water is a little rough there. Don't eat before you go, or you will be sick. A lot of people vomitted because of the motion of the ocean! The water is beautiful--the most gorgeous I've ever seen. We were on the 6th deck on our ship, and we looked down and could see the bottom of the ocean floor and the fish with 100-foot visibility from the shore.

This is a beautiful park for snorkeling. Beach chairs, shops, dining, drinks, lagoon, exotic birds, Mayan architecture, etc., are all available. Water is crystal-clear! Many colorful fish, not a lot of coral. There is a float to swim/snorkel to in the one area.
