WOW Beautiful

We spent the morning at Chankanaab in Jan. We made a stop here from our cruise on Carnival Inspiration. This is a beautiful place. We did some snorkeling, relaxed on the beach and even though we didn't participate in the Dolphin encounter we did watch and would probably do the next time. I would tell everyone to visit. It was $28 usf and we got a t-shirt, use of snorkel equipment for the day entry to the park. We took the walk around the garden to look at the replicas which were very nice. We didn't bother with the guided tour we just wanted to wander around by ourselves.

I would go back in second. It was great.

Chankanaab Park

Chankanaab Park was a wonderful day trip on our Western Caribbean cruise. We decided you only live once and to shell out the cash to meet the dolphins. We paid $100 per person for entrance to the park and the dolphin encounter. I believe admission to the park is $12 without a dolphin package. We spent approximately 45 minutes with one dolphin. She approached each person in the group and we got to hold her fins and then give her a kiss. The park does not allow digital cameras in the dolphin encounter area, they do however allow waterproof cameras. I strongly suggest buying a waterproof camera prior to your visit to the park. The gift shop sells waterproof cameras, but you can purchase them much cheaper elsewhere. Staff at the park took photos and a video of your experience and then tried to sell it to us after the encounter.

We spent the afternoon wandering around the grounds, enjoyed relaxing in the hammocks by the beach, tanning by the pool and looking at the ruins scattered throughout the property. Many other guests were snorkeling but we didn’t try it since we didn’t have any gear with us. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, and sports shack that rents gear. I would plan at least half a day at this park to do and see everything.

Chankanaab Park

Chankanaab Park is a Wonderful Experience. Our kids did the full Royal Dolphin Swim, and loved it. And now they allow parents (or whomever) to stand topside (along the walkway) and take pictures and videos, so you're not locked in to buying their standard video (although it is terrific) and their pictures (which were better than mine). My wife and I spent time with the Sea Lions, and they were a kick. We also wandered around the grounds, took their very limited "Botanical Garden," but had fun looking at the replica "ruins" scattered throughout the property. The kids did some snorkeling right off the beach and proclaimed it average (we also did snorkeling on the reefs, arranged by our hotel, which was much better. You can spend the better part of a day at Chankanaab, but if you are staying on the island, 1 day is all you need. Feel free to e-mail me with questions.

And please don't hesitate to drop me a line with your own observations about this journal/review. I like to see if my advice has value. Email me at rickhowe@aol.com.

Chankanaab Park

Although most cruise ships offer shore excursions to Chankanaab, it is cheaper and just as easy to get there on your own. In fact, if you are really brave and it is not terribly hot, you could actually walk the distance if you are docked at the Puerto Maya pier—it is 3.2 kilometers. We elected to take a cab, which cost us $10 each way. It costs $12 each to get into the park. There are lifejackets and snorkel gear available to rent.

Chankanaab is quite a large park with lots of coastline, palapas and a host of very non-ergonomic beach chairs. There is a lagoon with a walking path around it and lots of lizards and iguanas soaking up the sun. There is also a nature walk which weaves in and out around labeled native foliage and is interspersed with numerous replicas of ancient Mayan sculptures.

The shoreline is defined by a rocky ledge, and here and there is access to the water. Chankanaab is the best place for snorkeling with a great variety of colorful coral and an equally bountiful selection of vividly colored fish. The water was warm enough to stay in for hours.

For those with small children, there was an inlet with a sandy beach and very calm water. Several meters from shore in that area was a large rock, which the pelicans had a fondness for.

There were two restaurants where one could purchase food and I heard from others that it was reasonably priced and acceptable to the palate. There were two washroom/changing facilities and lockers were available to rent.

I have snorkeled in Puerto Vallarta, Key West, the Bahamas, and many more, and there is no better place to do it than Chankanaab Park. Another thing to do at this resort is to swim with the dolphins -- an unforgettable experience. I recommend doing it here!
