All the tourists stay and play at Waikiki Beach, and for good reason. It's a beautiful place, as long as you don't mind thousands of tourists just like you. The locals, however, go to beaches, mostly on the east (windward) and north shores of the island, and Waimanalo Bay is one of their favorites. Gentle, rolling waves make it perfect for bodysurfing in clear blue water. The beach is perfect, with white sand and easy access. And the best thing is that even in mid-August there were no crowds! Just a handful of groups, mostly locals. Make it a perfect day by stopping at one of the roadside stands and picking up a plate lunch. I wish I wrote down the name of the stand we stopped at - it's run by a group of Christian powerlifters, and they make a great lau lau!
