Description: Akumal is a sleepy little beach town located between Tulum and Playa de Carmen. It exists primarily for tourists but is low key as far as that goes. Akumal is known for it's turtles. They nest there year after year and there are times at which it is ideal to visit and watch the young catchlings scurry toward the sea. We rented a spacious guesthouse near the beach at the north end of town. A place called Yal Ku Lagoon was recommended to us for snorkeling and we discovered it was right around the corner from our lodging. We entered the lagoon through the back entrance that is reserved for groups. You get quickly to the water's edge from a short winding gravel trail that resolves in a wooden deck propped upon Yal Ku's rocky shoreline. From there we began our snorkeling adventure. The water here is more fresh than salt. The tropical fish are small and easy to spot. The water was cool and deep so that the only place to rest your feet was atop large rocks scattered throughout the lagoon. You can snorkel to your heart's content and voyage all the way to the opening of the inlet where the sea comes tumbling in. It's really lovely, peaceful, and not too overrun with tourists. You will definitely see parrot fish! We were so absorbed in the snorkeling that I hardly noticed the sculptures dotting the shoreline. A few days later I came back through the 'normal' entrance and was amazed to discover the other wonder of Yal Ku - it's abundance of sculpture. Yal Ku is as much a sculpture garden as it is a snorkeling paradise. Most of the iron cast Mexican women sitting or standing must have been created by the same artist. There were also white stone carvings of iguanas. Some of these sit right along the shoreline. You can't miss those. If you go and want to stay for some time, you can 'rent' a hut and keep all your belongings there. That would give you shade, a table, and a place to rest in between dips in the lagoon. Please be aware in advance that they do not want you to wear sunscreen. The residue is bad for marine life. You can however buy eco-friendly sunscreen and use it instead. It's beautiful and worth the visit.
