Romance, splendor, historic, transfixing, beautiful! From here you can see All of Florence! You can see the Duomo...YOU MUST CLIMB THE STAIRS TO SEE THE DOME AND THE TOP OF THE BUILDING...SKIP THE BELLTOWER - THIS IS BETTER though not for the unhealthy. You can see the St. Lorenzo Basilica (church), you can see the Palazzo Vecchio (castle in town by a lot of yummy places to dine and an area with many replicas of famous sculptures), the piazza Sta Maria Novella (an entire church made of a green and white marble exterior), the Palazzo Cupola (palace - go here! ), as well as every place in between.

PS: check out the website hotelgiada.com, where I found a great little hotel owned by a young and accommodating couple named Eva and Antonio.

Strollin' Florence Style

In the summer, especially on weekends, join the Florentines for a stroll in the Piazza della Signoria or Repubblica or down Via Calzaioli after dinner. Tourists and locals alike stay out well into the night, sometimes as late as one or two in the morning. Street performers of the moment include human statues that move only when someone drops lira into their hat or cup, fire-eaters and twirlers, singers and slapstick comedians and can be found mostly near Piazza della Repubblica.

Didn’t get all of your souveneir shopping done during the day? There are posters of famous Italian paintings or cityscapes, African art, fake Gucci bags and spray paint posters to buy.

Occasionally there are outdoor concerts in the Uffizzi walkway or Piazza della Signoria. Landmark caffes are open late, gelaterias aren’t.

Don’t walk around areas you aren’t familiar with by yourself and definitely avoid the Cascine Park at night, especially if you are a woman traveling alone.

Uffizi/Accademia

Uffizi/Accademia

I'm not going to go into the detail of these museums other than to say they are definitely must-sees. What I am going to say is MAKE A RESERVATION. We went on a strict budget, and I cannot stress enough that the reservation is more than worth the extra $1.50 it costs. Without a reservation, you will wait in line at least an hour (maybe two) even in the off-season. With a reservation, you walk right in. You can make a reservation over the phone or at the reservation office near the entrance to the Uffizi. In high season, you'll need to make a reservation a day or two in advance, but in shoulder or off season, you may be able to snag a reservation in the morning for later the same day. (We got a reservation at about 10:30am for 3:15pm the same day.)

Walking To San Miniato

Walking To San Miniato

This was one of the highlights of the trip. We walked over the Arno and up past Galileo's house to the old city gate where there is still a long stretch of impressive walls. We went on a Sunday morning and once you get outside the walls the beautiful tuscan hills unfold in front of you and the view takes your breath away. We followed the wall to the next gate and then turned up the hill to San Miniato church. This is one of the finest churches you will see in Florence. Perched on the top of a big hill, the facade beams in the sunlight. Once we made it to the top we looked back at Florence and the view was spectacular! Here are directions: start at the Pote Vecchio, go up Costa Di San Gorgio, turn left on Via Di Belvedere, turn right on Via Del Monte Croci.
