Be Nice or Leave

If you spend any time in New Orleans, you will undoubtedly see a few "be nice or leave" signs in the local joints. Now you can visit "outsider artist" (a PC term for folk artist) Dr. Bob himself at his gallery/studio at 3027 Chartres. Even if you don't purchase anything, the gallery is worth a visit. It is in a metal warehouse in Faubourg Marigny. There are a few air-stream trailers in the lot and a decorative, yet functional gate made of festively painted ironing boards. There is plenty of his quirky art for sale at reasonable prices ($20 for small "be nice" and up to $1,000 for larger and more detailed pieces) and many paintings in the $200-$500 range. Dr. Bob himself is often around and doesn't seem too busy to share a story or two. It's definitly worth a trip, and it puts you in the neighborhood for some great food and drink before you head back to the Quarter. If you can't get to the studio, you can visit and buy online at drbobart.com.
