If you are a serious shopper and have the time, take a trip across the lake on the worlds longest overwater highway to Ponchatoula, 'America's Antique City'. This sleepy little town, about 55 miles from New Orleans, is bursting with antique shops. You're bound to find a bargain in these unpretentious stores. They are nothing like Magazine Street.
Have lunch at one of the cafes and try a local specialty: strawberry daiquiri (I think it's Paul's cafe on the right as you come into town, not bad).
The kids will enjoy seeing the big gator in the caged pond on the right by the railroad tracks, and the old train engine on the left, but watch the hands around the antiques.
