Chichen Itza

We made our trip to Chichen Itza via a tour company arranged through our hotel. It's worth the long bus ride but we recommend using a tour bus company with air-conditioning in the bus. Before arriving at Chichen Itza, we stopped at an ancient cenote 30 meters below the ground where the Mayans used to make human sacrifices to the Rain God. The cenote is fed fresh water by the underground river system, so it was an amazing place to stop and take a refreshing dip in the rich mineral water.

Upon arriving at Chichen Itza, you will be guided by a Spanish/English speaking tour guide who will explain the history of this historic site. You will also have the opportunity to walk around on your own and explore the structures in more detail. If you are physically able, climb the pyramid! The view from the top is breathtaking! Rumor is that the pyramid will soon be closed to the public for climbing, so you don't want to miss this!

We stayed for the night show, which lights the park in beautiful color while telling the story of the Mayans. The content of the night show was very interesting, however we didn't feel that it was worth staying for after such a long day. We absolutely recommend seeing Chichen Itza, but skip the night show and buy a book instead.

We went on the trip organized by the hotel. The tour guide was very informative, but by the time we had visited places to buy souvenirs and had lunch on the way it was mid-afternoon by the time we got to the ruins, and very hot. The journey was mostly on the motorway with not a lot to see, and it would have been much better to hire a car and arrive earlier in the day. The ruins, however, were fantastic and a must do if you are visiting Cancun.

This tour is a must if you go to Cancun. It was fantastic to see these ancient Mayan ruins. It is a lot of walking, so make sure you wear good walking shoes.

Visiting the ancient Mayan ruins is amazing. Listening to the stories as told by the guides and just imagining how the Mayans lived and was able to build these amazing structures are really enjoyable.

Steamy, jungle-like, amazing, fascinating, awe-inspiring, flabbergasting. The adjectives to describe this ancient monument to the Maya gods are limitless. You need to have strong legs and little fear of heights (or falling from them) if you intend to climb the main pyramid. Did you know you can also climb the inside of the main pyramid?

I would recommend taking a tour to this site as it is relatively remote and will take the majority of a day from Cancun. You'll want a reputable company to take you to a restaurant that can be trusted to safely fill your gringo belly if you're not accustomed to local fare.
