We made our trip to Chichen Itza via a tour company arranged through our hotel. It's worth the long bus ride but we recommend using a tour bus company with air-conditioning in the bus. Before arriving at Chichen Itza, we stopped at an ancient cenote 30 meters below the ground where the Mayans used to make human sacrifices to the Rain God. The cenote is fed fresh water by the underground river system, so it was an amazing place to stop and take a refreshing dip in the rich mineral water.
Upon arriving at Chichen Itza, you will be guided by a Spanish/English speaking tour guide who will explain the history of this historic site. You will also have the opportunity to walk around on your own and explore the structures in more detail. If you are physically able, climb the pyramid! The view from the top is breathtaking! Rumor is that the pyramid will soon be closed to the public for climbing, so you don't want to miss this!
We stayed for the night show, which lights the park in beautiful color while telling the story of the Mayans. The content of the night show was very interesting, however we didn't feel that it was worth staying for after such a long day. We absolutely recommend seeing Chichen Itza, but skip the night show and buy a book instead.
