Isla Mujeres

For $50, you have an all-day trip on a trimaran that takes you to Isla Mujeres for snorkeling, swimming with a shark, shopping, and a buffet lunch. The lunch was one of the most authentic and good Mexican lunches I had while in Cancun. The snorkeling was good--we even saw a barracuda. Don't buy anything in Isla Mujeres. I bought a crucifix for what I thought was a bargain at $25 but saw it in the airport for $5. I am a bargainer and can speak Spanish, so I really got duped. Oh, well. Also, the quality of most everything is bad in Isla Mujeres. Just buy everything in Cancun or, even better, COZUMEL!

Shopping

Shopping on the island was the most fun. We rented a golf cart for $45 for the entire day. This allowed us to see the whole island and stop at each small shop along the way. It's best to park and walk a few blocks. We bought several pieces of silver pendants. The best part is when you can talk them down and walk out with a deal. The shop owners seem to enjoy dickering too. Never pay what their asking price is. We got our blanket for $12.

La Isla Shopping Village

La Isla Shopping Village is located on the main drag on Cancun Island. La Isla is an outdoor mall with name-brand retail stores, restaurants, smoke shops, local goods, a small supermarket, and an aquarium. There are a couple of small rivers that run through the shopping village. You can pay for a trip through the mall on a boat if you would like.

They had quite a few retail stores that are highly recognizable anywhere. Let's see if I can remember any. There was a Benetton, Guess, Zara, Tommy Hilfiger, Mossimo, Quicksilver, and I think a Banana Republic.

There were a couple of restaurants in La Isla, along with the typical fast-food venues. I am sorry I can't remember the names of the sit down restaurants.

Also located in La Isla was a small supermarket where you could buy bottled water at a much cheaper rate than your hotel. They also sold alcohol, cigarettes, cereal, candy, sodas and souvenirs.

Next to the small mini-mart was a gigantic souvenir shop. They had anything from glassware and sombreros, to crazy t-shirts and shot glasses. One thing I found amusing about this shop was the tequila shots as you enter the store (tips requested). You can take a shot (lime and salt included) before you shop. Cool.

The last area at La Isla, that I can remember, is the aquarium. The aquarium also has a "Dolphin Swim" feature and a "Shark Feeding" option.

There are a lot of brand-name retailers, and the best part of this is that there are some stablishments that are duty free, so you can get very good prices on shopping for some, like D & G, Tommy Hilfiger, Mossimo, DKNY, Nike, etc.

La Isla is a great place to go when you want to take a break from the beaches and opt for shopping. La Isla is an outdoor mall with a variety of shops, ranging from designer stores, duty-free shops, to your shops offering touristy items that complete each trip. It has a great atmosphere and the decor is rather appealing and allows you to appreciate another aspect of Cancun. What's also great is that it offers a variety of places to eat to complement a day of shopping, some authentic Mexican restaurants and other commercial restaurants that we have in the United States. It's a little bit away from the main strip but it still is worth going for the great deals you'll find in the stores.
