Eight miles northeast of Cancun you’ll find Isla Mujeres (Women Island). This idyllic island was once considered sacred by the Mayans, and you’ll find the ruins of this grand civilization peppering the island. Tourists flock to the island’s white sandy North Beach, while snorkelers enjoy the clear blue waters and robust reef just off Garrafon Park. Popular attractions include the sea turtle farm, the Dolphinarium on the island’s southern end and the dozens of fresh seafood restaurants (along with many other cuisines) that border the beach and Hidalgo Street in El Centro, the island’s main downtown drag.
