Highway 1

It is one of those areas where not many humans have walked. I've never experienced so much nature in one drive. We saw miles and miles of coastline while in a convertible. This is the only way to fully experience the drive. It is a very long, winding, hot, cold, windy, sunny, foggy ride. The weather changes often and rapidly. The eucalyptus trees are beautiful and fill the air with incredible fragrances as does the wild sage along the road. There are photo ops all along the coast: beaches, cliffs, waves, and wildlife. We spotted many deer, one elk, two cows in the road, lots of turkey vultures, possibly an eagle and a variety of other little critters. We stopped in a few little towns and ate. There aren't many places to stop because of the terrain, so we were always surprised to find that a town had been built in such a remote place. We will definitely try to take this drive again someday. Only this time, we would like to stay in Mendocino. It is a very cute town with the headlands where you can walk out and take pictures up and down the coast. This drive was the highlight of our entire trip.

I got to ride along the Highway 1 and it was gorgeous. It has been recognized as the most scenic drive in America and I couldn’t' agree more. Simply driving along, I got to see the coast from different angles, the wine country fields and the Sierra Mountains. It was so beautiful. Definitely worthy of another visit of places to stop for longer stays.

Pacific Coast Highway

If you love to watch the ocean, if cliffs are your thing, if driving with the top down is fun, then you absolutely have to take several hours to drive down the Pacific Coast Highway. I drove from around San Francisco south to Big Sur, and then turned back. I went through about 4 rolls of film taking pictures of the ocean, the beaches, the cliffs, the trees, the birds, the sunset and everything else. This was the most relaxing time I spent on my trip. Along the way, you can stop off in the coast town of Monterey. Here you can see beautiful houses, interesting shops and pleasant sea-side paths.
