Made a day trip here to have a tour of the winery. They have a very cute little restaurant that is great for a light lunch before the tour. I suggest sitting outside under the trellis, it is very nice. Cost of the tour is free, or $7 per person if you want to do the wine tasting at the end (which also includes a free wine glass.) Very informative, both during the tour and the tasting. Very good prices on their wine in the shop they have.

Follow the driving directions carefully to find this wonderful winery. It is about a 15-minute trip from Colonial Williamsburg, if you make every turn properly. We arrived for a sunset wine tasting and dinner. Fantastic! The rich red wines and the sweet whites make it hard to believe this winery has only been open since 1985. Telephone ahead to book tours April through October, and to get those directions. The rich Virginia soil is idea for growing wines with modern methods, creating the success that Thomas Jefferson could only dream about in his day. The prices of the wine by the bottle are quite reasonable, so consider making some purchases to enjoy at home.

Our tasting was in the Gabriel Archer Tavern which has been featured in the New York Times. Our food was wonderful. The environment of the vineyard is beautiful and extremely green. Put this winery on your "must-do" list if you enjoy fine wines.

The Williamsburg Winery is located just minutes from Historic Colonial Williamsburg with over 50 acres of vineyards surrounding the winery and tavern. The winery resembles a European village in the Old World Style. It is Virginia’s largest winery, producing over 50,000 cases of wine annually. Tours of the facility and wine tastings are held daily by the professionally trained staff members. The guided tour at $7.00 per person includes a video presentation on grape growing (Viticulture) and winemaking (Oenology) followed by a walk through the barrel cellar and a visit to the production area. In the museum you will see a collection of unique and rare vintage wine bottles. The tour is completed with a tasting of seven wines which are served to you in an etched wine glass that you may take home as a keepsake. Wines are available for purchase in the gift shop. The Gabriel Archer Tavern, situated among the vineyards, serves lunch daily from 11 am – 4 pm with main courses under $10.00. You can dine indoors or, weather permitting, on the outside terrace with a view of the beautiful countryside.

One of my favorite attractions outside of the major historical attractions is the Williamsburg Winery. Here you can take a tour of a modern winery and see how the grapes are grown and converted to wine. At the end of the tour, you will be given a tasting of some of the winery’s most popular wines.

The Williamsburg Winery was established in 1985 by the Duffeler family. The 50-plus acres of vineyards that surround the winery offer a beautiful backdrop to the Old World Style Village where the winery is located.

The guided tour includes a video presentation on grape growing (Viticulture) and wine-making (Oenology), a stroll through the barrel cellar, and a visit to the production area. In the museum there is a collection of unique and rare vintage wine bottles, with a grand finale tasting of seven wines in an etched wine glass that is yours to take home as a keepsake.

The wine has received several awards; I, however, did not take to the taste. Overall, it is very interesting to see how the wines are made and hear explanations of the various wine terms. Unfortunately, this tour is very short and focuses more on the tasting than on the process of wine-making. As my first visit to a winery, I enjoyed this attraction, but I feel it might come up short to others around the country.

The winery is open Monday to Saturday from 11am to 6pm. The tour and tasting lasts about an hour and a half.

I recommend this attraction for anyone (21 and over) interested in wine making, from beginners, who will enjoy the tour, to experts, who will enjoy the tasting.

We attended a wine-tasting and tour of this interesting winery. It costs $7 per person and includes the wine glass and a brief book explaining the wine-making process, along with an interesting history of the property. All in all, it's a nice diversion for an hour or two one afternoon. It is off 199 southwest of the Colonial Williamsburg area.
