Crissy Field

I woke up early one clear morning and strapped on my sneakers. Running is a great way to explore the city and people-watch, and there are always tons of people around, so you rarely feel unsafe. I chose to run along the waterfront, from the Fort Mason area down to Crissy Field and up to the Golden Gate Bridge. The views of the green water and blue skies were amazing; I ran along the water the whole time and watched the ferry coming over from Sausalito. There was a great path, so I never worried about traffic. I went early in the morning, and there were still plenty of people around, so I never felt unsafe. There were many people around Crissy Field, playing with their dogs or lounging by the water. Fort Mason Park was a great place to stretch and unwind after the run, watching the families with kites and dogs or couples with picnics.

Crissy Field

I can't remember what Crissy Field looked like before it was redone, but it's gorgeous now. There's a nice boardwalk-type walkway set a bit off from the water, so even if you're wearing high heels, you can take a walk through this park. Plus, being that the beach is integrated with the city itself (right by the GG bridge), you really have no excuse not to stop by and check it out.

Those equipped with swimsuits and towels can, on a particularly nice day, sun tan and take a dip just like you would in SoCal.

This time I was cold wearing a T-shirt and shorts, so I went back to the car for a clashing faux motorcycle jacket. That proved to be enough.

While SF weather usually prohibits true beach activities, find yourself a nice mini-dune to lie beside, and you'll be just dandy gazing up at the puffy clouds. Even though I was a bit cold from the wind, I went as far as my mid-calves into the water, and I do think it was doable.

Also, Crissy Field is great if you don't have time to head out of the city to hit Stinson Beach or Half Moon Bay.

Crissy Field

Crissy Field is a recently opened park / public beach on the bayside of the Presidio. It has a fabulous view of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, the Marina District, and the North Bay. Parking is easy and plentiful. There are usually many windsurfers to watch. This is a windy beach. If you jog, this is a nice place to go for a run along the water from Crissy Field to Fort Point (a Civil War era fort beneath the Golden Gate Bridge).
