Surfing

"The washout" is THE place where the surfers convene from sunrise to nightfall. Serious surfers are quite ambivalent about this area, where the surreal sea swells have washed away the land, creating the epicenter of a surefire surf. However, novices can be an obstacle in "the washout," swirling aimlessly amidst the swells. Be prepared to claim your wave and to shimmy your way around the aspiring surfers. The swells average 3 to 5 feet. However, we witnessed 8- to 10-foot waves due to the backlash of Hurricane Fabien. If you're a surf newbie, there are surf lessons and rentals available at McKelvin's Surf Shop on Center Street (www.mckelvins.com).

Surf-Kayaking

Enjoy the much-sought-after waves of this tropical paradise. Be prepared to be accompanied by a pod, or two, of dolphins. One of our friends was followed for two miles by a pod of loyal dolphins. The surf is the best here on the South Carolina coast and can be quite taxing, so experience is a must on turbulent waves. We used our own kayaks, as rentals are not available for surf-kayaking.
