College of Charleston

The College of Charleston was founded in 1770. It is the oldest institution of higher learning in S.C. and is the 13th oldest in the U.S. It was the first municipal college. Charlestonians speak with pride of this beautiful old school with its gorgeous architecture and reputation for excellence in educating its students. The college has experienced tremendous growth and the number of buildings and students has risen steadily. Those who are old enough to remember love to compare the size of the school from its beginnings to the present day. While the entire campus is interesting, it is the original area around the cistern, the columned building behind it, and the small library that should be viewed. The Cistern provided water for the campus in the 1800's and has been the sight for rather unusual and beautiful graduations through the years. This highly regarded liberal arts college has approximately 9,800 students today. It doesn't take much time, and if you are in the downtown area, it is a place to visit if one wants to understand and appreciate this city. If you are on King St. by Marion Square and the Francis Marion Hotel, you are within easy walking distance of the College.
