Old City Market

This market has an eclectic mix of just about anything and everything. A wide variety of souvenirs are offered here. Probably the best-known merchandise for sale at the market are the sweetgrass baskets, made on-site by local artisans, just as they have been doing for years. They have carried this gullah tradition down through the generations since their ancestors were slaves on local plantations. They are unique to this area; therefore, the price tags are not cheap. You will not find a basket for less than $30 (and that is for a very small one). There is also a variety of restaurants and shops in the more permanent buildings adjacent to the market. A Confederate museum containing artifacts and memorabilia from the War Between the States is also located on the Meeting Street end of the market.

The Old City Market

The market was very interesting. It reminded me a lot of the market in the French Quarter in New Orleans. They had some nice stuff to buy and some of what my husband refers to as "junk." They had a lot of sweet grass baskets, but I did not purchase one because I couldn't afford the nice ones, and I didn't want one of the smaller ones. I did purchase some nice silver jewelry with semi-precious stones at reasonable prices. One stall in particular had a very nice selection.

I have been to Charleston many times. The Old City Market is in the heart of old Charleston. It is quite busy now as it houses a flea market with many local goods such as sea grass baskets. These baskets are made locally and you can see many of the vendors making them on-site. Within walking distance are the many other great sight in downtown Charleston. You will need more than one day to see them All! But worth every minute. About 20 minute drive from Isle of Palm.

City Market is an open market under roofs of adjacent open buildings. Local artists sell everything from handpainted tiles to T-shirts. You can buy jewelry, candy, spices, etc. On either side of the Market are buildings that contain small shops. There's even a Harley store. The vendors start closing up around 6pm so come early.

The Market

Look, if you come to Charleston and don't go to the market, you're, well, for lack of a better word, a loser. This place was real neat. Of course, my wife was looking at one thing and I was looking at other stuff, but rest assured, there is something there for everyone.
