The outdoors were spectacular in April, and the river was inviting. I had never been in a kayak and had visions of the ones traversing rapids with the kayaker upside down trying to right himself. These kayaks were pretty stable, and once I got over my initial fear, they were not so scary. Of course, I had the advantage of having my daughter in my kayak with me. She had some experience and was very patient with her mother who was ridiculously inept at first. My son-in-law who shared a kayak with my grandson was also helpful. My husband unfortunately had to go it alone beside us in his kayak. The river was wonderful and those who passed us in larger vessels seemed to understand that we had the right of way. We didn't catch the current going out but were fortunate coming in. We were able to get a view of the vistas from below which we had walked through earlier. We only spent an hour on the river, but it was one of my very favorite activities during a weekend that brought so much pleasant company and activity. I love to take pictures and the people in charge of the kayaks gave me a waterproof bag for my camera. Thank goodness for helpful people. The spray would have presented a problem otherwise. My husband is thinking of grander and more adventuresome endeavors, but whatever we do, I will always remember my first kayak experience in the company of my family.
