One of the coolest aquatic experiences I've ever had. Being surrounded by amazing fish, and swimming right next to sea turtles in what feels like bathwater. Like being in a giant aquarium, I had no idea it would be so spectacular

Molokini Crater

Snorkeling and Molokini Crater was an interesting experience. Most hotels can either set this trip up for you or put you in the right direction. The trip consists of taking an hour boat ride out to the crater, where you get to spend time snorkeling around the boat.

At the crater, the reef is no more than 50 feet deep. You will find many small to medium tropical fish, and if you are lucky, a turtle might float by. You'll spend 2 hours or so there before you head back. On the way back, you will get a lunch and enjoy the ocean breeze.

Unfortunately, this trip isn't all it is cracked up to be. When you do get to the crater, you will find it to be very crowded, with as many as 15 other boats there. The fish really are not that interesting here, and the only reason it is popular is because there is guaranteed to be at least some fish. The best part about the trip was the boat ride. We went on a catamaran, and on the way back, we had the sails up. We got moving pretty quick. The flying fish were jumping out of our way the whole trip back.

There are many other places on the island that you can rent snorkeling equipment for a couple of bucks, go just off the beach, and get the same or better experience. Plus, you'll save $80 a person.

Molokini Crater

I needed to wake up early to get to Ma’alaea Harbor, where we assembled before boarding Ocean Voyager. It was about 6:45am, and our cruise departed at 7:15am. We did the check-in at the Pacific Whale Foundation Ocean Discovery Store, where I purchased Banana Boat sunscreen spray. After about 15 minutes, we had a short briefing from our cruise guide on the dos and don’ts of the cruise. Next, we proceeded to the Ocean Voyager and chose deck seats. After everybody was seated, the boat departed for its journey to Molokini, a moon-shaped island off the south shore of Maui. During the journey, hot breakfast was served, which featured Maui coffee, island juices, tropical fruits, and freshly baked pastries. There were also unlimited ice refreshments throughout the entire journey.

I started to feel giddy and nauseous after we had been sailing for 15 minutes. One of the staff members onboard was very helpful and caring. After knowing I was seasick, she offered me a cup of ginger tea and led me to the lower-rear cabin of the boat, saying this would help to reduce my giddy spell. As the boat was still in motion, I did not feel good and began to throw up for before reaching Molokini. When the boat finally came to a stop, I felt better. Resting for about 5 minutes, I grabbed the snorkeling gear provided on the cruise. I got an optical mask, boogie board, and personal flotation device before sliding down the water slide.

The ocean was splendid, alovely ecosystem of diversified fishes and corals. The water surface was smooth and clear. I dived deeper into the sea and made my own exploration around Molokini, as I thought different parts might bring new surprises. There were different community of fish and coral. When the school of fish comes in a larger group, they may be more brazen. They would swim and slither around your feet. Otherwise, you would have a hard time touching them. The snorkeling lasted for about an hour. We had our barbeque meal onboard before leaving for Turtle Arch.

The moment when we reached Turtle Arch, we saw a couple of turtles frolicking in the middle of the sea. By the time I could react to take pictures of them, they vanished into the deep-blue sea. It was then that I realized turtles are fast swimmers after all. Then I had my flotation devices ready and dived into the sea again. About 20 minutes later, I left the island and ended my 1-day snorkeling trip.

P.S. All meals, refreshments, and snorkeling equipments are included in the whole package! The total cost per person was only $65!!!

Paragon is a catamaran that is piloted by the owner and a crew that works hard and are friendly.

The clear blue waters off Molokini are great for viewing the fish and coral. We had a great sail out to the crater and about 30-45 minutes to snorkel. Food and drinks were available too.

We sailed back while a dolphin followed us and crested the waves in front of the cat.

Caution - Paragon (as most catamarans do) has trampoline like netting that is very slippery when wet! When you are returning from a great snorkel morning at a 25 knot clip, make sure to hold onto your drink--and the railing!

Paragon is one of the tours that I highly recommend. The captain and his crew are friendly, knowledgeable, and they love what they do.

Wow. It's called the fishbowl for good reason. We took a catamaran that held about 30 people (Paragon)over to Molokini. They served up a continental breakfast and deli sandwich lunch after the snorkel. Paragon gets there after the big morning rush and as many of the larger boats are leaving, which gives you some uncrowded space to move around. On a bad day the visibility is 100' on a good day it can be 200' (per Capt. Andy). While snorkeling was fun, the best part was the performance sail back to Ma'alea Harbor.
