There are several wineries in the Leesburg area, about 1 hour from Washington, D.C. Tarara Winery is my favorite, located near the Potomac River. This winery has wine sampling for $5 (you get to sample about 12 different wines), hiking paths, picnic areas, and great food. I recommend bringing a picnic, buying a bottle to share, and sitting on the grass of their lovely patio. You can also take a tour of the cellar, where the wine is made. This is fun, although chilly, and you learn a lot. Tarara also has a bed & breakfast and offers live music on Saturdays. My favorite wine is their Viognier, a white, fruity wine perfect in the summer. The winery is open every day 11-5 except Easter, Christmas and Thanksgiving.
