Description: Located near the west end of the
National Mall, the Washington Monument is both the world’s tallest obelisk, and the world’s tallest stone structure, standing 555 feet, 5 1/8 in. in height. Designed in the 1840 by architect Robert Mills, the monument was not completed until 1884 - the result of delays caused by the Civil War. Every year, millions flock to this marble, granite and bluestone gneiss obelisk, to gawk at its height or survey its surroundings from the observation deck in its point.
