Description: Located on the monument-packed National Mall, the Abraham Lincoln Memorial has stood as a testament to the 16th President for almost ninety years. Over 3.7 million people visit the memorial annually, which has been the site of many famous speeches like Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. The monument is constructed of Yule marble, and is surrounded by 36 fluted Doric columns, each representing one of the states of the union at the time of Lincoln’s assassination. More columns divide in the inside of the monument into three spaces, the center of which houses the 19 foot tall seated sculpture of Lincoln in contemplation (were he standing, he’d be 28 feet tall), the highlight of the monument.
