Gondola Ride

It's the thing to do when in Venice, so of course we did it. A gondola ride is definitely a wonderfully entertaining way to view the city, especially if you have an engaging guide like we did. Pricy for couples, the ride actually is quite affordable for groups. Remember, though, to negotiate the price before leaving and be aware that the tip is included.

Okay, it's cheesy and touristy. But you may find yourself regretting not taking a gondola ride. What's great about it? Being literally inches from the water as you float past some of the most spectacular sites of Venice, some on the Grand Canal, others on side canals. What's not so great? The embarassment you may feel being one of hundreds on the canal doing the same thing. Get over it! You won't regret doing this. Agree on the price beforehand (average costs are $70-$100) depnding on where and when. Another option is to try one at night.

Everyone who visits Venice should take at least one ride in a gondola. It is truly a magical, once in a lifetime experience. ~~~~ You can find gondolas for hire at several locations--near the Hotel Danieli, by the Rialto, near the train station and by the Piazza San Marco.

A typical daytime gondola ride, lasting about 50 minutes, should cost about 80,000L. The price goes up for a nighttime cruise, or for the singing which makes the gondoliers so famous. ~~~~ Settle on a price before embarking. Some gondoliers are rude, so just walk away. There is always another just around the corner. ~~~~ Our gondola ride went through the Grand Canal, and we got to see many of the famous sights and bridges. Some gondolas are also fitted out for a moonlit picnic under the stars--the perfect end to a day in Venice.
