Gondola Ride

Gondola Ride

To truly taste the city of Venice, a gondola is unmatchable! Though a bit pricey, if you take a ride during the day, it is more affordable. Rates depend on the gondolier and on the time of year. I rode a gondola during July (height of tourist season) and paid 150 euros for a 1-hour ride (that includes tip). But you cannot put a price on the experience! It was worth every euro.

Gondola Ride

So before you visit Venice, many people will tell you to avoid the Gondola rides. Many people believe them to be an expensive tourist trap. But I totally disagree!! This is one tourist trap that you absolutely cannot leave Venice without experiencing. The Gondala rides are amazing and give you an experience of Venice that is hard to duplicate. On the boat, the city seems even more beautiful. Plus, your Gondola driver will give you some great little tid bits about the city. My friends and I actually took the opportunity to get some inside info from the driver as well. For instance, he gave us some good tips on nice local restaurants. The views and experiences you can get from a gondola ride are hard to duplicate!! Do not miss out on a ride if you are in Venice!!

Gondola Ride

Gondola rides are a blast. They are available on the Grand Canal in Venice. When the group I was with went on the ride, four people went in each gondola. The drivers were clothed in what is considered traditional wear for them: black pants; a black-and-white, striped shirt; and a hat with a red ribbon. The gondolas have plush seats and are very comfortable. You get an amazing view of Venice as you travel the canal, and be sure to take your camera along for the ride - you can get some great photographs. I also had the pleasure of seeing where they filmed the canal scene in “The Italian Job;” the driver pointed this out to us. Whether you are looking for the novelty of a gondola ride, something to do with friends, or a romantic ride, this is an activity for you.

A Gondola Ride

A gondola ride in Venice... Sounds like an overpriced tourist trap, I know. We almost didn't do it after we asked the price, but luckily came back later thinking this might be a once-in-a-lifetime experience and that we'd be filled with regret when back in Los Angeles. Boy, were we glad we did!

You can get started behind the Bauer Hotel, near St. Mark's Square. The gondoliers hang out there, waiting for customers. Our timing was perfect. The sun setting cast a beautiful light on the water and pastel-colored building around us. Our photographs were amazing!

Our gondolier was friendly, informative, and funny. Although he didn't "sing" for us, he gave us so much interesting historical information about the city, that we felt like we were getting a private tour guide in addition to the beautiful ride. He also gave each of our children (11 and 14) a chance to stand, hold the oar, and steer the gondola!

Although the Grand Canal is gorgeous, the best part is going down narrow canals and seeing everyday people's apartments and homes. Even seeing the Opera House and imagining that people actually go to the Opera by boat is amazing! If you don't like doing tourist things--get over it this once! You will not regret or forget a gondola ride through Venice's breathtaking canals.

We reserved a sunset group gondola ride, and we really didn't notice everyone else... It was great; how could you go to Venice and not have a gondola ride?
