Verizon Center (ex MCI Center)

One of the best places in the area to go view a sporting event. The sound system is great and so is the score board. Maybe its because its all indoors, so the sound doesn't leave the stadium. Even so, it has powerful sound. Even if your seats are bad, you won't feel like you had a crappy night. They have student specials on Wednesday nights during Basketball season. The arena is huge, so you should always be able to get tickets. The Wizards games are a must see; there is more entertainment provided then just the cheerleaders and the game.

The MCI Center

The MCI Center was built in 1997, conveniently whilst I was on my year of living in D.C. It's a smart new building taking up about a block, and is near China Town, so on the side nearest China Town the signs are in Chinese. Inside there is a large store with merchandise for all the local teams, and some not so local, as well as several restaurants for food before a game.

The Washington Wizards, The Washington Capitals, The Georgetown Hoyas and The Washington Mystics all have their home here. The center is also used for conferences - I went to a travel show here, as well as music concerts.

Access to the MCI center is terrifically easy since it's actually built on top of the Gallery Place/China Town Metro Stop, which is on the Red, Green and Yellow lines. There are also around 10,000 parking spaces within 10 blocks of the center, so a car is a possibility even in the heart of the city.

The MCI Center is worth a look even if you don't get the chance to see a game of any sort.

Wizards Games at the MCI Center

Wizards Games at the MCI Center

I visited Washington, DC for the 1999 NBA Draft two years after the MCI Center first opened in 1997. The building was so impressive in its newness, but also in design. In the middle of DC's rapidly shrinking Chinatown, signage on one side of the building called out the MCI Center in Chinese. Pretty cool.

Inside, more to be impressed by. Sponsored and retail areas were as subtle as sporting arenas get and the food/concessions reflected the neighborhood and the times.

But locals I spoke with pointed out that "no one goes to Bullets games." Excellent example of local disinterest using the team's old name.

How things changed when a certain worldwide superstar decided to un-retire! Lucky me... Because of my career, I've had the chance to see MJ play at least 10-12 times in the last five months. The highlight, without a doubt, was seeing him score 51 points against the Hornets on 12/29. I was able to take my parents to that game. It was the first time they'd ever seen him play live and it was a spectacle they'll never forget. Nor will I.

No matter if the Wizards make the playoffs or not, I'll always be glad for his efforts as a Wizard. It has been so fun to watch basketball in DC this year. I'll keep going and I hope other people will too.

Take the Metro to Gallery Place/Chinatown. Plenty of good restaurants and bars around for before or after the game. My favorites include Jaleo, Legal Sea Foods and Angelo & Maxie's.

MCI Center - Wizards Basketball Game

The MCI Center is a great place to see a game. It is a newer arena and reminds me of a smaller United Center for watching basketball games. Maybe that is because #23 Michael Jordan now plays for the Washington Wizards. Anyway, I have sat on the 200 Club Level and, it is lovely.

The concourses are carpeted and there is a great variety of foods - not just hot dogs and pretzels. I had a prosciutto panini with roasted peppers. Then I had a tiramisu for dessert. The 200 level also has waiters, if you prefer that bring food and drinks to your seat for a 15% automatic gratuity.

The MCI Center located is right above the Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro stop.
