Windmills of the Zaans Shans River

This was by far my favorite part of the trip. It's a quick 15-minute ride on the train from Amsterdam Centraal Station to the Koog-Zaandijk train stop or a quick 5-minute walk to the beautiful windmills of the Zaans Shans river. It's a great place to see authentic Holland windmills with a few tourist shops for souvenirs and a great pancake breakfast restaurant.

Windmills Galore!

I saw a picture of Kinderdijk on the local news, and I asked my husband, "Is that real?" It was just so postcard-perfect that surely, it could not be real. With that, we took the 45-minute drive from our home near The Hague to Kinderdijk. And yes, it was very real and even more beautiful than the photo we saw on television. Imagine 19 windmills, all within a kilometer of each other--spectacular! We turned down a side road, parked the car, and strolled all the way down to the end of the dirt road. On this road, there are 10 windmills, and they all are historical landmarks. Many of them have a brief history of the building and the original owners. The mills were all built in the mid-1700s, and all are in remarkably good condition. Most of them are also family homes. There is a visitor's museum, but unfortunately, it was closed on the day we visited. My advice--pack a picnic basket and go to Kinderdijk!
