National Zoo

National Zoo is part of the Smithsonian Institution and offers visitors glimpses of more than 5,000 animals. Home to many rare and endangered species, the zoo shelters its residents on 163 acres of natural habitats. The newest big attractions are the giant pandas, which were introduced to the public in January, 2001. Informative displays are scattered throughout the zoo, and special events, lectures and shows are frequent.
Getting there
We took the metro. It's the Woodley Park Metro station. After you get off, it's about a 1/2 mile walk to the zoo.

Wear comfortable shoes because there's a lot of walking involved!

If you love animals and are fond of trips to the zoo you have to visit the National Zoo. There are thousands of species represented with caretakers that have no problems answering questions about them. The zoo is free and is easily accessible by public transportation. When you visit it is best to visit on a weekday and bring a good pair of walking shoes.

The stars of the zoo are the Pandas. According to their keepers they are the most playful and sociable pair of pandas that the zoo has had. The day I was there the two kept the crowds happy with playful antics running in and out of their cages. Just the Pandas make a trip to the zoo worth it.

Other interesting animals are the Pygmy Hippos that are smaller than many large dogs, the Lions, the Apes and a new attraction that allows you to explore how animals think. The interactive exhibit is lots of fun and also includes lectures and classes by zoo keepers.
