Miniature City in Madurodam

A very large "small" Holland. Miniature buildings made as replicas of the real deal of all of Holland. Including the canals, and the airport in Amsterdam. Very fun, and very interesting to see. Also allows you to plan where things are if your lost! Great fun for all ages! I really enjoyed this, and we had an added bonus of an ice show while there, it was on display, totally awesome! Hand-carved ice. HUGE.

Outside of Den Haag, Netherland's political capital, is Madurodam. Make a half-day trip and go to the Miniature City of Madurodam. Everything there is about 1:25 scale to real-life structures. The entrance fee is about 12€ for adults and less than 9€ for children.

Originally built as a memorial to a Dutch soldier killed in the war (by his parents), this cross between a museum and a traditional model village shows all the major landmarks in the Netherlands 1:25 scale. There are well over 100 buildings, plus all the "countryside", to see, and the informative booklet fills in all the details you need on everything. There is a lot to see, including the airport, trains, boats, etc., which all move, plus the buildings themselves, which are fascinating. A lot of the models have buttons to push, which then makes something happen, like a bridge lift or cars move or the football crowd start singing. At the clog factory, a €1 coin will get you a souvenir of a tiny pair of clogs, while at the chocolate factory, 10 cents will get you a miniature bar of chocolate. There are several more of these around, nearly all 10-cent ones - have fun finding them for yourself!

Madurodam is the smallest city in Holland. Actually, it's a collection of miniature cities.

Objects are made right in Madurodam to a 1:25 scale. We took the train from Amsterdam Central to Den Haag (The Hague) Central, then the no. 22 bus (the no. 9 tram goes there, too) to Madurodam. It was only about a half-hour train ride to Den Haag, then 15 minutes by bus to Madurodam.

This miniature city opened in 1952.

High-school students from the region serve as the mayor and inaugurate new scale models.

The Madurodam at Den Haag (the Hague) is a miniature city spread out over some five acres. Famous buildings and landmarks of Holland are created in exquisite detail. To give you an idea of scale, the spire on a miniatue cathedral came to mid-thigh. There is an airport in miniature, a habor complete with automatic loading of ships, and model trains running throughout. Flowers were everywhere. It has to be seen to be believed.

This spring there was an indoor exhibit of ice sculptures, huge things, including buildings and monuments. Truly amazing (and cold - they give you special gear to wear while walking thru the display)
