City Market

The fresh flower market is more than cut flowers; there are several stalls that sell small and large gifts, flower bulbs, balls of cheeses, old and new antiques, local artist items, the traditional tourist gifts and once in a life time finds. A wonderful way to spend an early afternoon and free. Around the corner from the flower market (just ask one of the stall dealers) is a wonderful weekend flea market. Looks like a good old fashion American garage sale, all sorts of junk, good stuff, WW II stuff, home artist goods, handmade candles, leather jackets (old, new and used), a lot of imported Asian baskets, carved wood and other items. There is a fair portion of North African art (reproductions?), old dishes, old books and so forth. For the addicted junk hunter and pack rat (like me) this was a good 2-4 hour high for me. I bought a 1920's bronze French (email me and I send you a picture) vase that had a small crack in the base of the metal for less than 3 US dollars. I have dry flowers in it now, but may have it professionaly fixed someday so it can hold water. As I am an admitted flea market, junk collecting, treasure finding fool.. I give these two outdoor markets high marks.

It'll be hard not to find something you like while perusing the city market. Most of the items being sold look like they belong in a garage sale, but among all the trash, treasure is to be found.

I found a beautiful one-of-kind handmade wire and beaded necklace for about $3.00. Something like this in a shop where I live would have cost more than $20.00. The clothing being sold was in pretty good condition and certified vintage. Most of the other items peddled are souvenier items that one would buy to take home.

I wasn't intimidated by the language barrier. Just point at something and wave the money. If all else fails, find someone who knows English--not very hard. I had two German speakers with me and since Dutch is similar, they were able to help me out.
