Canal Cruise

The canal boat tours generally run about 90 minutes, taking tourists through the canals and Amsterdam harbour. The canal cruise boats (of which there are several operators) take tourists through the major canals and the Amsterdam harbour. Major points-of-interest are pointed out in several languages (English, German, French, & Dutch at a minimum), and there are numerous photo-opportunities. In addition to sight-seeing, you'll learn some of Amsterdam's fascinating history, as well.

You can get some interesting photos from the canal boat, and it's a great way to get a quick feel for Amsterdam's history, architecture and people.

Looking for romance? Try an evening cruise! Buildings along the canals are lit up at night.

The canal cruise that we took was interesting in the beginning but after an hour, I got a bit bored. Our guide just steered the boat and played a prerecorded tape. My boyfriend on the other hand, fell asleep due to the beer at the Heineken factory earlier that day.

I would recommend taking a short one. I think ours was about 2.5 hours and too long. Getting a guide that is interesting is a big part of that. We couldn't ask questions due to ours being prerecorded.

Be sure to take a canal boat tour of the city. It takes about an hour, and you get a short lesson (in your own language) about the history of the canals and the growth of Amsterdam along the the way. The view from the boat gives you a different perspective on life in the city in modern, and older times.

A canal cruise is a must for anyone visiting Amsterdam for the first time. You will see and hear about a variety of buildings, history and other interesting things as you slowly wind your way through the canals. You will get some wonderful photos (as you join the other photographers on the bow of the boat). Several options for cruises exist (we took a fairly long one that also went into the harbor) and you will see cruise operators throughout the city. I recommend going right before sunset. This way you will see most of the city in the broad daylight, but also as the lights come on and they provide a beautiful backdrop for your cruise.
