Bus Tour Amsterdam - Not a Good Idea

Bus tours are not a really good way to see the city. There are not many wide roads in the city and many attractions can not be seen from the bus. Even at the couple of attractions that can be seen from the bus, the bus has to move on quick and there is not enough time to enjoy the sites. Red Light District, Vondelpark, small canals, Begijnhof, Civic Guards Gallery, Jordaan are all areas that can not be seen from the bus. So in case you think about a tour the best options depending on your condition are:

1 bike tours, this is fast and reliable, and typical for the city, though only an option for people who are quiet healthy and confident to drive a bike. The infrastructure in Amsterdam is very well developed for driving bikes with many bicycle paths although there are high bridges and some streets with busy traffic.
2 Boat tour. This has the limitation that you only see the Canal Belt, Amstel River and the IJ area. Can be combined with public transport and or some walking. Relatively cheap, between 8 and 12 euro´s per person for a hour and 15 minutes tour. Also tickets availbale for whole day with stops. This is more expensive, around 20 euro per person.
3 Bicycle taxi tour. Good idea if your not well able to walk long distances. These little taxis can enter or come close to most areas, ask the price ahead, between 35 and 50 euro for 2 people for 1 hour is normal, for longer tours very often attractive prices can be negotiated. In 1 to 1,5 hour they can show you a big part of the city. Not all drivers are as knowledgeable, but some are very good. For a reliable and good one call jan, cell phone :0031646502718. In case he is not driving he will contact a colleague that is reliable and knowledgeable too.

Amsterdam Bus Tour

This is a nice tour around Amsterdam. The tour guide was very good and we saw quite a bit of Amsterdam. Anne Frank's house was insipring to really try to understand what they were going though.

The diamond cutting tour was awful. Very little time was spent on how they get diamonds or cut them or rate them. It really was more of a pushy sales job to get you to buy something. They lock you in a room to "tell you about diamonds" and show you some, but it seems like they won't unlock the door until someone buys something. Then the long walk out is past counter after counter of jewelry with everyone asking you to buy something.

Skip this and wander the street while everyone else is inside. Don't miss the bus though.

The windmills are also great to see, though none of them were turning or in use when the tour was there.
