Zuiho-in Temple

Description

This is the mortuary temple of a Christian daimyo, Sorin Otomo [1467-1568]. He was well known for both his international outlook and as an art collector. In 1562 he took the name Sorin when he became a Buddhist lay monk. Francisco was the Christian name he received in 1562 when he was baptized. The focus of the temple (established in 1535) is its rock garden, which includes a cross-motif in one grouping of stones.
