Yongsanjae Rite

Description

This ancient rite is a re-enactment of the Saddharma Pundarica Sutra, a historical sermon delivered by Buddha. Observers can experience traditional rituals and dances such as the Chongsubara (cymbals dance accompanied by sutra chanting), kobul (a ritual for greeting Buddha), popkomu (a salvation drum dance), and pokchongge (a salvation ritual). As well as observing, visitors can partake of special vegetarian food usually eaten by monks. A modern twist to this ancient rite is prayers for the reunification of South and North Korea, as well as world peace. Held on the 24th day of the fourth lunar month; admission is free.
