Since the country's inception in 1948, it has been in an almost constant state of war with casualties in the War of Independence, the Suez Crisis, The Six Day War, The Yom Kippur War, Lebanon, the Intifada, the Gulf War and terrorist attacks. Because of the small size of the country, most Israelis know of someone who has lost a life. On this day, there is a huge service held at the Western Wall on the eve of Yom Ha'Zikaron and a morning memorial service at the national military cemetery, Har Herzl.
