Yom Ha'Shoah

Description

The memory of the Holocaust effects many in Israeli society. Six million Jews were killed during that time, and many of Israel's early immigrants were Holocaust survivors. The day chosen to remember the victims of the Holocaust each year is the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in 1943. At 11am, a siren sounds for two minutes and all human movement stops. Cars grind to a halt and drivers get out on the highway to respect the silence. There are special services for school children and opportunities to hear survivors speak.
