Description
Legend tells us that the Prince of Sagely Virtue, Prince Shotoku [547-622] established Hokan-ji in the 7th century. Modeled on Osaka's Shitennoji, the design was typical of the Asuka period, incorporating the axial plan of the Korean Kingdom of Paeckche. This pagoda [last restored in 1440], which is an important cultural property, has five Buddhist images surrounding the huge focal pillar. It has been a principal Kyoto symbol for centuries. Sadly it is the only legacy we have today of Hokan-ji.
