A Good Variety of Animals at the Farm

Wythenshawe Community Farm is run on a short shoe string & supported by mainly volunteers who work there for the love of animals. They have a good healthy variety of livestock which include cows, sheep ,pigs, hens & ducks all are very well cared for by the dedicated staff. The Hereford cattle often win awards .
It has many school groups visiting which is a brilliant way for children to learn a bit about animals & where their food might come from!
The staff are friendly & helpful & would always be glad of exra help & sponsorship.

Farm Needs Upgrading

I took my six year old neice to the farm - she lives nearby and I felt quite upset by the conditions under which the animals are kept - perhaps this is normal in factory type farming now but...A number of sheep, unshorn with tatty coats in a small enclosure with their lambs - crying to be fed when we arrived thought they got their food eventually. The cattle and pigs ditto. Pigs had no mud to roll in, etc. Chickens and fowl were the best off - but they were also in too small an area.

There was a forlorn air of neglect and apathy. Smells of the country does not have to mean dirt and slurrry.

If you just want to see what an animal looks like - OK . But these are not in natural surroudings and I am not sure what the children are learning at all.

In a huge, proud city like Manchester - surely you can do better than this? If not, don't do it - just have pictures!
