William J. Clinton Presidential Center

This was definitely the highlight of our trip. The unique museum building is striking. The displays are chock-full of more information than one could absorb in a single visit. The overall tone of the exhibits emphasized Clinton’s compassion for the people of the country and of the world. There was also a good measure of his sense of humor.

The building was designed to resemble a bridge, a symbol often used in Clinton’s speeches. Located next to the river and almost parallel to a railroad bridge, the similarity in structure is hard to miss. Two graceful water fountains bracket the entrance. The entry level a special exhibit on the Secret Service and a presidential limousine. Escalators, elevators, and stairways are available to the next two exhibit levels. The penthouse level is a private apartment for President Clinton. The second level has an orientation film that pumps you up for the rest of your visit. Don’t skip it. On the exterior walls of the theater are highlights of the 1992 and 1996 campaigns and Clinton’s political button collection. I spent quite a bit of time in the cabinet room replica. Interactive displays are imbedded in the oval table and they have a wealth of information. In the primary exhibit hall 16 alcoves focus on different policy area. I carefully read through the first two alcoves and then my brain shut down. Overload! From then on I let my eyes wander the U-shaped alcove and if something caught my eye I would read in depth. The Timeline exhibit is also overloaded with good material. Each panel addresses one of the eight years of his presidency. Located below each panel are binders with the President’s daily schedule. I made sure I checked what he was doing on my birthday each year. Another fun exhibit I found were some personal notes written by the President to celebrities, politicos and plain folk.

On the third floor my husband was particularly interested in a special exhibit. At the entrance was a life-size photo of young Billy Blythe Clinton in his cowboy outfit. Every movie and TV cowboy from the 1950-60s was featured. I moved on to the exhibit of some of the gifts the Clinton’s had been given. Another area showed life in the White House both in the private quarters and in the elegant state receptions. On one pillar along this walkway a video ran in a continuous loop. It showed Bill and Hill poking fun at themselves in several speeches and “send-ups” they taped. The crowd around that pillar grew and grew.

In addition to the exhibits, this building contains Café 42. Unfortunately the museum gift shop is located in an old building near the riverfront area. The highest admission to the Museum is $7 for adults. It is open Monday through Saturday from 9am to 5pm and Sunday from 1pm to 5pm.

Clinton Presidential Materials Project

Little Rock, AR will be home to the Clinton Presidential Library -- which will be built with private funds. Until it is built, the National Archives have rented space in Little Rock to store the Presidential Materials from the Clinton presidency. The temporary facility occupies 53,000 square feet. Our tour consisted of the unclassified materials (a section of the facility contained classified documents that was off-limits). There is a total of 76.6 million pages of documents, 75,000 documents and 1.85 million photographs. It was overwelming how well documented the Clinton administration was. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. On display were artifacts from each of the 50 states and really representing the personal side of the Clintons. They also had a small display of the gifts from foreign governments, which was very interesting. No photographs were allowed.
