Description: Wawel Hill is a massive Jurassic limestone outcrop, located on the left bank of the Vistula River in Krakow, and has been a site of human habitation since the Paleolithic era. Today Wawell Hill is home to Krakow’s Royal Castle and Wawel Cathedral, both popular tourist attractions. The Gothic Royal Castle consists of a number of structures around a central courtyard, many which date back to the 14th century. Here visitors can see the treasures of the Crown Treasury on display in the historic Gothic Rooms. The Wawel Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Stanisalw and Vaclav, is considered Poland’s national sanctuary. In its 1,000 year history, the cathedral has served as the traditional coronation site for Polish Monarchs, while Pope John Paul II offered his first mass as a priest in the Crypt of the Cathedral.
