Victoria Park and Fossil Grove

Description

This is a particularly exciting park because it has a world famous fossil grove comprising ten fossil roots and stems of trees 350,000,000 years old, protected by a glass roofed building. These were discovered completely by accident during the construction of a pathway through an out of use quarry when the park was laid out late in the 19th century. It is now designated a site of Special Scientific Interest by Scottish National Heritage and provides interpretative displays and ancient geological specimens.

The 58 acre park opened in 1886 (the year when Queen Victoria celebrated her Golden Anniversary - hence the name) and also has a boating lake, formal gardens, sporting facilities and a bandstand. You can admire the Victoria Jubilee commemorative gates on the way out.
