Superb 12th Century Norman Castle - Still Lived in!

I'm surprised no one has actually reviewed Berkeley Castle as it features so much in British history and the family too. The Berkeleys built their castle in 1153 and have lived in it ever since, making it the longest continuosuly lived in castle in Britain. Edward II was murdered here with a red hot poker and you can still see the room where this happened and the deep dungeon next door. The rest of the castle is full of treasures pictures and apparantly ghosts! We missed out on their Ghost Hunting event 2 weeks later. The Great Hall is beatiful and after the castle we enjoyed the terraced gardens and the Butterfly House where we walked among flying butterflies and small birds scuttled around. Next door is the Edward Jenner Museum where vaccination was invented and although there is a Joint Ticket we didn't have time to do both so we're going back. The church aslo has musket loops and bullet holes from the Civil War. Berkeley is a bit off teh beaten track but is well worth a visit. Berkeley Square in London was owned by the family, and they created the Berkeley Hundred in Virginia and also Berkeley California.
