Canopy Adventure

Canopy Adventure

Canopy claims to be the second largest of its kind, exceeded in length only by one in Costa Rica. This is nominally an "eco" tour, with the guides pointing out various jungle plants and animals along the way. Primarily, though, this tour involves being hooked up in a harness and pulley and traversing 13 different cable crossings, most of which take you high above the rocky river canyon below. I had my doubts about the wisdom of taking this tour, as we are no longer kids, but are in our early 60s. Our fears were soon dispelled, however, as we floated through the trees with the greatest of ease. We bought the video of our group's tour--$40, and have proudly showed it off to unbelievers. This was our best tour of the week.

Vallarta Adventures - Marietas

We have been to Islas Marietas before, but not like this. Other tours take you straight to the islands, snorkel, and then back. Vallarta Adventures gave us a good tour around the islands, showing us natural stone arches and caves we had not seen on previous trips. This is a tour which mixes great fun with a learning experience. The guide talks about everything from the ecology of the area to the historic importance of the islands for the pre-Columbian peoples to their use as a bombing range for the Mexican navy. The snorkeling was was great, with bright tropical fish along a steep underwater cliff. Alas, we did not see dolphins or manta rays, but nature gives no guarantees.A delicious lunch is served and there is open bar on the way from the islands to a secluded beach where we spent a couple hours relaxing in the sun and exploring tide pools before closing out another perfect day.

San Blas day trip

San Blas day trip

The bus ride takes you up the coast and over an arm of the Sierra Madres through villages and rainforest. It is a long ride, but the scenery is great. Near the town of San Blas, you board a small motorboat called a panga for a trip into the mangrove swamp (bring mosquito repellant). For birdwatchers, more than 300 species of birds have been spotted in the area. We saw white egrets, blue and gray herons, and cormorants, to name a few. There are also crocodiles. We saw four on our trip, as well as iguanas and turtles. A stop at a crocodile farm is included where you see babies being readied for release in the wild. This trip was a real treat for us animal lovers. From the swamp, the bus goes to the town of San Blas for a little shopping and sightseeing. The town is very picturesque, with an old cathedral downtown, and a very old Spanish fort on the hill. From there, it's back down the coast with a stop for lunch and drinks at a beach restaurant, and a stop at a roadside produce market. A very full day.

Rhythms of the Night

Fun, romantic, all-inclusive evening starting with a boat ride at sunset (90 minutes) on catamarans equipped with a crew to entertain you and serve you with drinks (and Dramamine if needed). Lots of fun-filled activity on the way to the location, part of the estate of the late John Huston, director of the Night of the Iguana.

Once docked, you walk along torch-lit paths to the romantic dining areas, where you are served a pre-selected menu of foods, wine, etc. The food is tasty, but not five-star.

At an appointed time, you are then taken to an outdoor amphitheatre for the performance, under the stars. Very well done and professional. Not at all what I expected.

The return to the dining area gives you time for a coffee and liqueur prior to reboarding for the boat ride home. The music is quiet and subdued, for a much quicker ride back, and taxis are waiting for you at the pier.

Very well organized.

Vallarta Adventures - Marietas

A very fun trip. Great crew, all helpful and fun. Nice trip out to the Marietas, with a narration of the island and of the birds. Unfortunately, the snorkeling was not too good that day due to a tropical storm/hurricane near Cabo and the water was churned. But the crew still made it fun. We had a good lunch and you could have quite an array of drinks. We went to a secret beach, but when they take you ashore, do not forget your sunscreen -- we fried!
