We had a fantastic time on our whale-watching sail. Just out of the bay, we spotted a mother and her calf. What a sight! It's also great for seeing dolphins and sea turtles.

Canopy Tours

Unbelievable, wonderful, and exciting. Climb into the trees and "swing" from tree to tree up the mountain and then down. It's breathtaking crossing over the tops of trees and rivers. We had two kids ages 10 and 11 who had so much fun and wanted to "run" ahead. The guides were helpful and comforting to those initially afraid and made it truly enjoyable. Your best bet is to wear tennis shoes (not sandsls).

Canopy Tours - South

Canopy Tour south started at the south end of town. We took a taxi from our resort. We rode an open-air vehicle (similar to military trucks) to the canopy tour site, south of Los Arcos. Sunglasses are helpful for the ride to keep out any dust, and watch your hats. The starting site had clean new bathrooms (important to us soft gringos), and a nice restaurant overlooking the river. This was the drier season, end of March. The guides were very friendly, helpful, and encouraging (and cute.) They gave us good instructions as to what we would be doing, and there were two guides for every eight people. There is quite a bit of hiking up trails, but mostly between each cable station. The two spiral staircases up trees were the most formidable, after that the rest was just fun. You're hooked onto cable to slide across to the next platform. We crossed high over the riverbed/canyon three times. The best part was hollering in delight! My husband is 55, I'm 48, and our children are 21 and 18. We all enjoyed this activity. I felt very safe. I'd love to do it again when the orchids are in bloom.

Snorkeling and Whale Watching

My wife and I went to Puerto Vallarta during the week of February 28, 2004 to March 6, 2004. One of the days we went on the Vallarta Adventures snorkeling and whale watching trip to the Marietas Islands. Unfortunately we went too late in the season and only saw two whales. The snorkleing was merely OK; I was disappointed after snorkeling in Maui last winter. If you are going just for the snorkeling you will probably be disappointed.

However, the rest of the trip was a lot of fun. The crew was great, the food was pretty good and the open bar was open the whole trip. The crew leader was Chuby Do and he was like a Mexican Adam Sandler. The crew really busted their butts to make sure everyone had a great time and provided great service. The trip the secluded beach was great, and it was nice to be at a beach with no vendors. The only problem was it was very hot and there was no shade to speak of. As you can tell I am from Minnesota and not used to that much sun in the winter.

Make sure you catch the crew's rendition of Summer Lovin' from the Grease Soundtrack on the way back to the port. It may have been the funniest part of the trip.

If you are looking for whales go earlier in the season and if you are only going for the snorkeling you will be disappointed, but if you are going for a fun time with a great crew, this is right up your alley.

This is an all-day trip and really worth the money. We got the chance to see areas that you could only get to with four-wheel drive and meet locals. Our tour guide was great. I have a bad back and had no problem on this 4x4 jeep trip. I highly recommend this tour. The tour company is safety conscious and professional.
