Description
An excellent example of Baroque architecture in Moscow, this monastery was constructed towards the end of the 17th century by the Naryshkin family, relatives of Peter the Great. The Church of the Virgin of Bogoliubovo was established in memory of the Streltsy revolt during which several of Peter's relatives were killed. The Church of St. Sergii was built in 1690 as a token to Peter's doing away with his rival Sofia. The monastery was closed after 1917. Worship was resumed in the St. Sergii church in 1992, and retains the official status as a residence of the Patriarch (Orthodox church head).
