Umekoji Steam Locomotive Museum

Description

A great place for fans of steam locomotives, six of which are still in operation. The museum was opened in 1972 on the hundredth anniversary of the first railways in Japan.

You can climb up into the cabs of the engines in the fan-shaped engine shed, which leads out onto the turntable. The locomotives themselves were built between 1914 and 1948. Toys and other railway trinkets can be found at the entrance to the museum, which itself is actually the old Nijo Station (1904) relocated to its current position in 1998.

A short ride of a kilometer can be taken behind one of the working engines for JPY200 (kids JPY100). These depart at 11.30, 13.30 and 15.30.
