Tybee Island Lighthouse

We've visited the Tybee Island Lighthouse multiple times during multiple trips to Savannah. For only $6 (and free parking!) you can climb the lighthouse and tour other houses on the grounds.

The lighthouse was built in the 1700s and, thanks to preservation and restoration, is still standing today. It has 178 steps that take you to the top, where you can step out onto the observation platform for a spectacular view. The view includes Ft. Screven and the Savannah River meeting the Atlantic Ocean.

Back on the ground the admission price includes self guided tours of other buildings on the property, including the Head Keepers Cottage, which is full of artifacts and information about the history of the lighthouse and the Keepers' family.

There's also a gift shop, where you can buy just about anything with a lighthouse on it for pretty good prices.

While at the lighthouse you might as well drive to the beach. (or walk - it's very close but after climbing the lighthouse you might be too tired for the short distance). The beach is peaceful and offers a unique view of the lighthouse over the sand dune. You might also consider checking out Fort Screven, which is also within walking distance (There's meter parking there)

The Tybee Island Lighthouse was a pretty cool place to go. If you're in good shape a fun thing to do is take the hike all the way to the top of the lighthouse. The view is amazing from there and you can see Fort Screvren.(I think, but it might be a different fort.)Back on the ground, the head keeper's house is open to be toured. It has been restored with original or replicated furnishings and gives you a good idea of what it was like.I would definitely urge you to visit Tybee while you're in Savannah. After seeing the lighthouse, I'd suggest the obvious, going to the beach! It was raining the day I was there, but it could be fun on a nice day. We ate under the Tybee Island pavilion and pier which I would recommend. However, the waves looked pretty weak so don't count on boogie boarding too much.

This 19th-century lighthouse has been well preserved, along with several of the original other buildings, such as the light keeper’s house. A small museum and gift shop are located at the bottom. Visitors may climb the 185 stairs to the top and get a feel for what the light keeper’s daily chores must have been like. Those who make it to the top are rewarded by a wonderful view of the ocean and surrounding beaches. Located across the street is Fort Screven, which houses exhibits on the history of Tybee Island.

For the lighthouse lovers among you, here's another place to stop during your travels. It took us a while to find it because we had to wind our way through a residential neighborhood before we actually found it. As it turns out, it is actually the third lighthouse that had been built in this vicinity. The first two lighthouses were too close to the water, and the elements eventually destroyed them. They had to move the lighthouse back some distance in order to protect it, although it didn't save it from damage (fire) during the civil war, but it was rebuilt, this time out of brick and cast iron. We didn't get to climb the lighthouse (which is open to the public) because it was a very hot afternoon and we were not about to go traipsing up a hundred and something steps. In fact, this particular lighthouse is being offered for free to anyone who would volunteer to take care of it. A friend of mine sent me that article in a local newspaper before we took our vacation. We did not volunteer to become the new caretakers, as much as we enjoyed our visit.

Beautiful view from quite a hike up the stairs. I forget how many flights the guide told us it was, but it was quite the workout! And getting on the top "walk-around" portion of the outside of the lighthouse was a bit nerve-wracking. There was only supposed to be 12 people on the outside at all times, so you kept walking around counting the people, just to make sure. :)
