Eiffel Tower

Afterwards we went to the Eiffel Tower and the city fascinated both kids! They prefer to go to big cities for holidays, rather than to islands all the time, they commented! There is a very good Internet site: www.tour-eiffel.fr/ in French, but they also have versions in other languages. This site has 500 pages of information, 1,000 illustrations, 360° and 3-D virtual visits, as well as videos of the millennium sparkling lights and fireworks display.

They realised things were more expensive in Paris when we had to pay €7.50 for a Sprite and from then on ordered water in restaurants and bought mineral water in the Metro, as it was cheaper!

Everybody woke up early the next day to go to Disneyland, but I found they returned relatively early, which surprised me. In the afternoon we sat in a café close to Notre Dame with an English bookshop next door. Chris found a book he liked about the Industrial Revolution in Rural France and wanted to buy it, but I talked him out of it luckily! We then took the train to Montmartre and enjoyed watching the little shops and restaurants on the way, as well as the countless painters once we got there. Gisela was most impressed, as she likes to draw and paint herself.

After Montmartre we found a nice restaurant near Moulin Rouge for dinner. Both my husband and son ordered lamb chops, but one was overcooked, even though he had ordered rare and the other was nearly burnt, so they returned them both and got new dishes!

The thought of going to the Eiffel Tower didn't really excite me, my friend really wanted to go and I was happy to go along. As we got closer, however, I was amazed by the scale and dare, and beauty of it. It's set in a beautiful park along the side of the Seine and just walking under it is fantastic. So we got in line, unfortunately we couldn't walk up or go right to the top because it was windy but we paid to go to level two. The view is amazing, we got there about 8pm and it was still light so we could see everything and then we waited until it got dark at approximately 10pm. Two hours on a platform and I wasn't in the least bit bored! When the lights come on it's even more fantastic. I am not known for being overly sentimental or gushy but even I was grinning and saying WOW a lot. I didn't want to go back down but hunger forced us to. Fortunately you can grab some slightly overpriced crepes from some stands near the tower but I think they probably taste better with that view.

You will need some warm clothing up there and you will be constantly harassed by street sellers but I recommend you buy one of the glass Eiffel Towers which glow different colours they are so kitsch. You can get them all over Paris and I suspect we paid over the odds as we got them under the Eiffel Tower but hey I was really enjoying myself.

When we got to the Eiffel Towel, I had absolutely no intention of going up it—I deplore heights and panic when on a step ladder, so I didn't think it would be the best idea. However, having chosen the travel companion I did, I eventually had to cave in on the basis that I would be going no higher than the first level. Now, you can either walk or take the lift. Walking is cheaper, and I think if you can manage it, it gives you much more of a sense of achievement. The tower is huge (as you would expect), and I think waiting to begin the ascent was the worst for me. Once I started climbing, I was fine; there is so much metal surrounding you that you feel exceptionally safe. I felt so safe, I walked to the second level (a total of 700 steps), and wheezing as I was, I enjoyed a spectacular panoramic view of the city. My only regret is that we didn't go all the way to the top. We honestly didn't think it was that much higher than the point we reached until we got back down the bottom and looked again!

I believe, all in all, that the walk cost us a total of under 10€, which, in my opinion, was one of the biggest bargains of the whole trip! And when you return triumphant and shaky-legged (if you're as unfit as I am) to the bottom, there are lots of little stalls selling beautiful-smelling (and tasting) crepes with a choice of fillings, a great snack to have before you head off to see some more of this historical city.

The Eiffel Tower

Whilst in Paris, I wanted to see some of the city, but unfortunately, I was simply too busy. However, one evening, a few of us decided to pop out for a meal in the city. Whilst in the city, we decided to see the Eiffel Tower.

I have seen the tower before, and in fact, I have been right to the top of it, but I had never seen it at night in the dark.

We got a taxi from out hotel and were dropped off a few feet from the tower. It was very impressive, with bright lights down the sides against the dark sky. Just as we were approaching it, the lights started to “dance,” and suddenly we were in the middle of a stunning light show.

It really was mesmerising, and I tried to take a few photos, but many ended up blurred. I attached a few of the better ones.

We walked under the tower and looked up through the middle, but you cannot see too much, as there is a large mesh on the first level.

One other thing of note was the guards. There were lots of soldiers marching round the tower carrying machine guns, a sign of the times I suppose.

I am so pleased that I was able to see al least one bit of Paris whilst I was there and would definitely recommend visiting the tower at night, even if that is at midnight, as we did.

The views from the top are absolutely breathtaking. I never could have imagined how beautiful this city is! If you're in Paris for the first time, I strongly recommend starting at the Tour Eiffel and then ending with the view from Le Sacre Coeur.
